Automobile Sales Managers Stick to your knitting

A car sales manager must challenge their sellers.

One of Tom Peters rants is Stick to the Knitting. For a car sales manager it means that you keep track of what you pay to do. No deviation.

In fact this is so important that it can only be an occasion when its really ok to say Its not my job.

If its not related to selling cars its certainly not your main responsibility.

I thought of this Peterism when a boss shared some thoughts about a future project.

He told me that the project will be housed in his facility. But in addition to being landlord this car sales manager had little to do with the proposal.

What happened is the day after getting an overview of what the project entailed he sent the project manager a list of ideas that he thought would benefit the project.

Shortly after meeting SEND the manager received an answer that essentially said Thank you for the entry but stick to your own knitting.

When he thought about it he realized that although it was directly the answer was spot on.

Whether youre a car sales manager for a new car dealer or sales manager for a used car business if your next action is not geared to driving traffic to your car dealer or following up a prospect or coaching a car dealer then you will not stick to the stitching.

Sure there are some administrative tasks you are responsible for. But I bet that your bonus structure is not linked to them.

In a car dealer it is easy for a sales manager to get sidetracks. Just like the boss above gets involved in things that are not even related to his position. I know he is not alone in this regard.

Watch out for social media

There are many different timers. One that is becoming more common is social media socializing.

Now before you get on your tall and powerful rocks its a bit socially good. Car dealers need to invest time just chatting with their car dealers. Part of being an effective boss is knowing your people.

The socializing time the thief I refer to is not so visible. Not so visible because if someone saw you it would not be obvious that you are socialized. In fact you are often at work when you participate in this kind of socialization.

You know the socialization Im referring to.

These are the quick little text messages between you and the home you and a friend you and the bowling league you and the world. Oh its only thirty seconds here and a minute there and ... You get the picture.

I once had a business manager to blame when I suggested that she spent a little too much time texting and did not do what she should do. Its only a few seconds why is it hard with this? is the readers Digest version of her thoughts about my worry about her excessive texting at work.

Here is a reality check. According to a study conducted by the PEW Research Centers Internet & American Life Project over half of all text messages are personal. Of course almost one third of respondents said that 100% of their text messages were personal.

The study ended. From our own experience those who use text messaging do it in significant volumes. Thus noteable personal text messaging volumes can significantly reduce employee productivity.

Joe Verde has this saying Go to work to work. Is not that what it should be? We each of us must stick to the knitting.

As car sales manager is your next action focused on driving traffic to your store or following up a chance or coaching? If consistently anything other than these activities you must check what you are doing.

You can do this by creating a rough day log and making a cruise every time you reach your mobile device to either read reply or create a non work related text message.

As you go through your day check what you are doing and ask yourself. Is this in the best interest for the people who sign my paycheck? If you know anything but a YES do not.

Heres another reason why managing your activities is so important; Your car sales team and business executives model the behaviors they see in you.

By keeping a consistent focus on knitting you should ever have to deal with the time that wreaks behavior with an employee you can do it in good conscience.

Remember Nothing happens until someone sells something.
